EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) - Josh Murray scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds and Antoine Lewis added 14 points as IUPUI surprised Northwestern 56-53 Wednesday night.
IUPUI (3-3) -- playing its third game in three nights and its fourth in five days -- went on a 12-0 run to take a 48-43 lead with 3:40 left in the game. Murray converted a three-point play with 5:04 remaining in the game to give the Jaguars a 45-43 lead, and Odell Bradley hit a 3-pointer to punctuate the IUPUI run.
Northwestern got within two points on a layup by Jitim Young with 5.7 seconds to make it 55-53, but the Wildcats were unable to force IUPUI into a turnover on the ensuing inbounds play and fouled Josh Mullins with two seconds left. He hit the first free throw and missed the second and Northwestern's Jason Burke missed a desperation shot that would have tied the game.
Young led Northwestern (2-1) with 16 points, as four Wildcat players hit double figures on the night. However, the 'Cats committed 18 turnovers and IUPUI recorded 11 steals, the most by an opponent in the Bill Carmody era at NU.
Northwestern went on an 8-1 run to open the second half, with T.J. Parker hitting a 3-pointer to give the Wildcats a 36-28 lead with 14:40 left. Antoine Lewis scored eight consecutive points for IUPUI, during a Jaguars 8-3 run to cut the Northwestern lead to 39-36 with 12:00 left in the game.
IUPUI jumped out to a 20-8 lead in the first half with a 15-2 run. Mullins hit a 3-pointer to start the run and Murray hit a jumper to make it 20-8 with 6:40 left in the first half.
Northwestern responded, however, by scoring 20 of the last 27 points of the half which gave the Wildcats a one-point advantage at the break, 28-27.
Northwestern forward Winston Blake left the game with 2:06 remaining with a right ankle sprain and did not return, a critical blow to NU's comeback chances. He finished the game with 13 points, while Aaron Jennings and Parker both had 11.
