EVANSTON, Ill. - Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) became the 16th player in Northwestern history to record her 1,000th career kill, but it wasn't enough, as Indiana defeated the Wildcats 22-30, 30-26, 30-28, 30-23. It was the third straight loss for NU, dropping its record to 13-11 overall and 6-6 in the Big Ten. Indiana improves to 16-8 and 6-6.
Lange is the first Wildcat to reach her 1,000th kill since Carmen Burbach did so during the 2000 season.
Lange led the 'Cats with 16 kills and six total blocks, but the Wildcats hit under .125 for the second consecutive match, hitting .120 on the night. Iwona Lodzik (Tarnobrzeg, Poland/Tarnobrzeg) added 11 kills for NU.
Melissa Brewer posted a match-high 20 kills for the Hoosiers, who had 14 total team blocks, compared to six for Northwestern. Katie Pollom added 16 kills, while Christina Archibald added 15.
The Wildcats cruised in the opening game, as Indiana hit just .044. The 'Cats trailed 10-9 when they went on a 6-1 run to take a 15-11 lead. Northwestern's lead was 20-17 when it scored six of the next nine points for a 26-20 advantage, before closing out the victory. IU was hurt by 12 errors in the set.
The Hoosiers reversed their fortunes in Game 2, hitting .293. Brewer recorded nine kills in the frame. Indiana held a marginal lead throughout the game, and despite a slim 27-25 lead, finished off the game by scoring three of the final four points.
Indiana jumped out to an early 11-6 lead in the third game, before Northwestern rallied to within 15-14. The Hoosiers were able to fight off the run, though, increasing their lead to five at 21-16. IU led 27-20 when the WIldcats mounted a final charge. A 7-1 run closed the hosts to within 28-27, but kills by Pollom and Brewer sandwiched a kill by Lange, giving the Hoosiers the win.
IU dominated the fourth and final game, as Northwestern hit -.051 with 12 errors. Indiana gradually pulled away from the 'Cats throughout the set to move them into a tie with NU for sixth in the Big Ten.
Northwestern returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday when it travels to Minnesota.
