MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Freshman Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) continued his strong play, reaching the round of 16 to lead Northwestern this weekend at the Big Ten Singles Championship.
Schaechterle, who reached the doubles final of the ITA Midwest regionals earlier this fall, made quick work of Purdue's Paul Rose with a 6-3, 6-2 win and then knocked off Indiana's Viktor Libel 6-0, 7-6. Alex Zharinov, the 51st-ranked player from Minnesota, ended Schaechterle's run in the third round.
Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) lost his first-round match but won two straight to reach the consolation semifinals where he lost to Pramod Dabir of Illinois.
Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine), the No. 5 seed in the field and 76th-ranked player in the nation, lost in the second round to Ryan Recht of Indiana.
Ahmed Wahla (Lahore, Pakistan/Lahore American School) competed in the 7-8 draw and advanced to the semifinals before losing to Penn State's Brad Nudell.
Northwestern resumes play when the dual match season begins Jan. 18 against Denver at Combe Tennis Center.
