Axler, Schaechterle Fall in ITA Regional Doubles Final

MADISON, Wis. - Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) lost to Juan Pablo Barriga and Erick Martinez of Northern Illinois, 8-6, in the ITA Midwest Regional doubles final.
Axler and Schaechterle entered the tournament unseeded but beat the odds, blowing past the first five rounds of the event. They went 5-1 in the Regionals and are 7-2 this fall. The duo also had an impressive showing at the adidas Invitational in late September, reaching the semifinal.
"Josh and Adam had a great run," said NU head coach Paul Torricelli. "They showed a lot of promise at the adidas Invitational last month, and they picked up right where they left off. They've got terrific chemistry and I think that made the difference in a number of the matches."
The Wildcats host the Purple and White intrasquad scrimmage at 6 p.m. Friday at the Combe Tennis Center.
