Swimming and Diving Teams Open Season in Style

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's men's and women's swimming and diving teams got their 2002-03 seasons off on the right foot Friday night, posting victories over Toledo and UW-Milwaukee at the Norris Aquatics Center. The Wildcat men defeated Toledo 128-103 and UW-Milwaukee 172-55. The women knocked off Toledo 131-105 and UWM 160-80.
Both the men and the women took home titles in nine of the 13 events. Katie Paglini (Chicago, Ill./Latin School), Carmen Cosgrove (Perth, Austrailia) and Vicky West (Redlands, Calif./Redlands) were each double winners on the women's side.
Paglini, in her first collegiate meet, posted victories in the 200 IM (2:07.33) and the 200 back (2:04.74). Cosgrove captured the 200 fly title by three seconds (2:04.70), in addition to winning the 200 free (1:55.51). West claimed both of the distance events, winning the 500 free by over six seconds (5:01.35) and the 1000 free by 38 seconds (10:13.52).
The men also had a pair of double winners, as freshman Mike Oxman (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) won on both diving boards, while Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) took first in the 100 free (46.29) and 200 breast (2:08.64).
Oxman scored a 245.30 on the one-meter board and a 240.95 on the three-meter. Swanson posted a narrow victory in the 100 free by seven-hundredths of a second, before winning the 200 breast by over three seconds.
The Wildcats will return to action at noon on Sunday when they host the NU Relays.
