EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern dominated the first half and never looked back in a 2-0 win against Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday at Lakeside Field. Freshman Jaro Pylypczak (Lombard, Ill./Benet Academy) scored the game-winning goal for his second tally of the season.
Pylypczak corralled a loose ball near the top of the goal box and fired it past Mastodon goalkeeper Peter Hachaj at the 32:56 mark.
"It was a big game for us," Pylypczak said. "We had an awful game against Illinois-Chicago our last time out. We wanted to come out strong today, but most importantly we just wanted to get the job done and we did that."
Freshman Adam Sirois (Barrington, N.H./Berwick Academy) gave NU a two-goal lead a little more than three minutes later. Steve Jedlinski (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) fed Jeremy Cook (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) a long ball, and Cook crossed it to an open Sirois who buried the ball in the net.
"I thought we played well in the first half," said NU head coach Tim Lenahan. "We had a lot of energy. They forced us to go up and down a bit in the second half, but we held on."
Senior goalkeeper J.D. Martin (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) picked up his fifth shutout of the season, leaving him one shy of tying the school record.
The Wildcats outshot the Mastodons 10-2 in the first half and 13-4 for the game.
Northwestern (6-8) returns to action at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 when it hosts Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Lakeside Field.
