COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Northwestern and Ohio State volleyball teams entered their match Saturday night headed in opposite directions. On one hand, the Wildcats were off to their best Big Ten start since 1987. Meanwhile, the 24th-ranked Buckeyes entered the match at 0-4 in the conference for the first time in school history.
None of that seemed to matter, though, as OSU swept three straight games from NU 30-24, 30-27, 30-22 in front of 1,219 fans at St. John Arena.
The loss drops the Cats to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten while Ohio State improves to 7-8 and 1-4.
The Buckeyes welcomed setter Katie Virtue back from an early season injury, as she posted 48 assists in her second match back. Big Ten Player of the Week Stacey Gordon had a huge night for OSU, recording 26 kills. Shelly Draeger added 18 kills.
Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) led Northwestern with 13 kills and nine total blocks.
The Buckeyes dominated in the match in nearly every statistical category. OSU recorded 59 kills compared to only 33 for the Wildcats. Ohio State posted a team hitting percentage of .238, while NU hit just .115.
Northwestern will host a pair of Big Ten matches next weekend when it takes on Michigan on Friday and Michigan State on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
