CHICAGO, Ill. - Beginning September 9, the "NBC5 Wildcat Watch" will air every Sunday during the Northwestern football season during "Sports Sunday" on Chicago's NBC affiliate. The segment will include an interview with head coach Randy Walker and a profile on one or more of the Wildcat football players.
As the 2001 season approaches, there are are high expectations for the Wildcats after their great season in 2000 when they led the Big Ten in total offense and scoring and brought home their third Big Ten Championship in six years.
Led by star running back Damien Anderson, the team is picked to go far in 2001. Anderson, a senior, became the first back in NU history to surpass the 2,000-yard mark for a single season last year -- he had 2,063 -- and was a consensus All-America.
"We know Damien is a great player," said Walker. "He is an All-America on just about everybody's list, and he's certainly a legitimate candidate who will be considered strongly for the Heisman Trophy. Two thousand yards is no small feat."
"Northwestern is Chicago's hometown college team, and we are thrilled to have the Wildcats as part of Sports Sunday each week," said Frank Whittaker, Vice-President of News at NBC5.
NBC5's "Sports Sunday" is Chicago's top-rated sports wrap-up show on Sunday nights and airs at 10:35 p.m. It is anchored by Darian Chapman and Mark Schanowski.
