EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Northwestern women's soccer team was shut out for the second time this weekend, falling Sunday to Michigan State, 1-0.
With the loss, the Wildcats dropped to 2-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Big Ten.
In an evenly played match, the Spartans got the only goal in the 68th minute off a free kick. Playing quickly, MSU was able to get behind the Northwestern defense and beat Wildcat goalkeeper Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South). Tiffany Laskowski was the goalscorer, with the assist going to Amy Allen.
Earlier in the game, McCreery had kept the score tied by saving a Michigan State penalty kick.
Michigan State outshot Northwestern, 10-9, and had two corner kicks to NU's one.
"Michigan State caught us a little off guard on the goal and made us pay," said head coach Jenny Haigh. "It was an even game and we created some nice chances for ourselves, but we just didn't take advantage of our opportunities."
Northwestern is back home next weekend. The Wildcats host Illinois Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. and Iowa Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will take place at Lakeside Field.
