LOGAN, Utah - The Northwestern women's soccer team gave seventh-ranked Washington all it could handle Monday morning, but the Huskies pushed home the only goal of the game in the seventh minute of overtime to escape with a 1-0 win in Logan, Utah.
Katie Ernst, who came on as a late substitution in regulation, netted the gamewinner with a short shot. The win pushed Washington to 2-0 on the young season, while Northwestern dropped to 1-1. Both teams beat Utah State earlier this weekend before closing out with the neutral-site match.
Susie McCreery was the story for Northwestern. The senior goalkeeper had seven saves to keep the Wildcats in the contest and push it past the 90-minute mark. Overall, Washington outshot Northwestern, 21-9.
Northwestern will be back in action next weekend, hosting doubleheaders on both Saturday and Monday at Lakeside Field. In Saturday's action, Northwestern will play St. Mary's (Calif.) at 1 p.m., followed by Minnesota and Brigham Young. On Monday, Minnesota and St. Mary's kick things off at 11:30 a.m., followed by the Wildcats and the Cougars at approximately 2 p.m.
