EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern field hockey team dropped its seventh game of the year to the Ohio State Buckeyes, 3-1, at Lakeside Field Friday afternoon. The ninth-ranked Buckeyes used a speedy offense and heavy defense to improve its overall record to 7-1, 3-0 in the Big Ten. The Wildcats fall to 1-7, 0-2 in the conference.
Ohio State jumped out to a 1-0 lead when the Wildcats scored in their own goal as they defended a scrum in front of the goal. The Buckeyes came out of the break, 1-0, and netted two goals within two minutes of one another, putting the game away. Marije van Nouhuys scored with 22:54 left in the game and Vanessa Immordino found the back of NUs net just 1:50 later.
Northwestern's goal came late in the second period as sophomore Katie Walshauser (Wildwood, Mo./St. Joseph's) redirected a Michelle Cifelli (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) shot. Cifelli took an open shot at the top of the circle after both teams struggled to gain control, Walshauser redirected the shot past Buckeye goalkeeper Allison Blanton.
OSU outshot the Wildcats 13-5 and produced seven penalty corner to NU's 4.
