BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Northwestern field hockey team defeated Indiana, 4-1, Friday afternoon in Bloomington. It was the Wildcats' first Big Ten win of the season.
NU scored two goals in the first half and two more in the second half to win going away. The Wildcats improved to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten.
"I'm very happy for our players right now," said head coach Marisa Didio. "I think they are getting a sense of what we need to do and where we need to go. Our hard work is finally paying off with a win."
Juli Fomenko got the scoring started for NU, converting a penalty corner. Diane Provencher was credited with the assist. Later in the half, Suzi Sutton scored with a pretty reverse-stick goal from just inside the circle.
NU got the scoring started in the second half, as well, when Provencher rocketed home a shot off another penalty corner. Indiana got one of the goals back when Lauren Micka tallied, but Northwestern responded less than two minutes later when Lindsey Millard put in a rebound after Nicole Smith's shot hit the post.
Provencher, Millard and Sutton each had a goal and an assist to pace the Wildcats. In goal, Katie Hall went the whole way and made five saves for the win. NU outshot Indiana, 7-6.
"Our support players really came up big today," said Didio. "They did a good job of understanding our game plan and showed a winning attitude, which is exactly what we've been looking for."
Northwestern will remain in Bloomington and meet Louisville in a neutral-site match Saturday afternoon.
