EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's soccer engaged Indiana in a riveting match Friday afternoon, and the result ended up being a 1-1 tie at Lakeside Field.

Northwestern (1-3-1, 0-0-1 Big Ten) was playing its first match in 11 days, and was looking for some offense after being shut out in three straight contests. The Wildcats did not have to wait long.

The Wildcats got a corner kick in the second minute of the contest and converted it, as Katie Hertz (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) rocketed a headball into the corner of the goal after Kase McCoy's (Medina, Ohio/Medina) service. The official time of the goal was 1:13.

"Every goal in this sport is a momentum changer," said head coach Jenny Haigh. "It was very important for us to get in there early and set the tone, and we did that. It was a great goal by Katie."

That set the stage for an exciting and tense affair that went 120 minutes in front of a large home crowd.

Indiana (3-1-1, 0-0-1 Big Ten) held play through much of the first half, outshooting NU 5-1. The Wildcats took it to Indiana early in the second half, but the best chance to score for either team came when IU's Lisa Tecklenburg uncorked a shot that beat NU keeper Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South). The shot hit the crossbar, though, and fell harmlessly away.

The Hoosiers' equalizer came in the 68th minute off a set play. A cross by Stacey Peterson was re-directed by Kara Bryan and slipped past McCreery.

Both teams had nice opportunities to win in the extra sessions. Enyo Dzata (Eugene, Ore./South) nearly won it in the first OT for Northwestern with a thundering shot that just sailed wide. In the second session, Bryan sent an effort on goal that forced McCreery to make a superb diving save.

"I don't know how to feel about the tie," said Haigh. "Obviously, you want to win every time out. But we did a nice job and kept Indiana in check. It was a result we'll have to be satisfied with."

Northwestern is back at home Sunday, hosting Purdue at 1 p.m.
