EVANSTON, Ill. - A full month into the Division I volleyball season, the Northwestern women's volleyball team (3-3, 0-0 Big Ten) will finally open its home season this weekend at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Last weekend's Wildcat Classic tournament, which was slated to be the home opener for the 'Cats, was canceled due to the terrorist attacks on the East Coast.
"Everyone's a week behind," head coach Keylor Chan said. "Our players were tired from back-to-back long weekends, now they're rested and excited to play."
In addition to playing their first home matches, the Wildcats will also open Big Ten Conference competition against Michigan (3-3, 0-0) on Friday and Michigan State (7-0, 0-0) on Saturday. Match time for each night is 7 p.m.
"I'm looking forward to competing in the Big Ten," Chan said. "We play these two teams very competitively and there should be some good matches this weekend."
Northwestern and Michigan enter the weekend sporting a .500 mark, with matching 3-3 records. The winner of Friday night's match will secure a spot in the top half of the Big Ten standings.
If Michigan State defeats No. 9 Wisconsin in Madison Friday night, Spartan head coach Chuck Erbe will be shooting for his 100th career Big Ten win Saturday at Northwestern.
Leading the way for Northwestern is sophomore outside hitter Molly Kamp (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore). Kamp is tops on the team with a 3.05 kills per game average and a 2.82 digs per game average.
