EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's soccer gave Brigham Young a spirited battle Monday afternoon, but an early goal by the Cougars held up in a 1-0 match.

BYU's goal came just 2:20 into the match off the foot of Krissa Campbell. A ball was sent into the middle of the NU goal box, where Campbell won a footrace with Wildcat goalkeeper Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and pushed it over her head.

BYU (3-1-0) ended up outshooting the Wildcats, 7-6, and Cougar keeper Jen Waldron had three saves to McCreery's two in a well-played match. Northwestern (1-3-0) had a great chance to tie it in the final seconds, but a turning shot by Carolyn Hack (Downer's Grove, Ill./North) sailed just wide of the goal.

"We played hard today, but had a couple of lapses and they cost us," said NU coach Jenny Haigh. "We need to learn our lessons from that."

In Monday's opening match, St. Mary's jumped on Minnesota (1-3-0) and never let the Gophers up, recording a 2-0 victory. As a result, both St. Mary's (4-0-0) and BYU finished with 2-0 records in the weekend's round-robin event.

The Gaels set the tone in the first five minutes, when Jen Belzer fired a rocket off the crossbar. That effort went for naught, but 14 minutes later Sarah Takekawa gave SMC a lead it wouldn't relinquish. She one-timed a cross from Katie Sticinski that sailed over the head of Minnesota's Julie Eibensteiner and clipped the underside of the crossbar before finding the net.

In the second half, Jennifer Barbera added an insurance tally with 11:28. Taking a cross from Katie Frattone, she took a short touch in front before blasting a 15-yard shot past Eibensteiner's left side.

St. Mary's outshot the Gophers, 19-6, and hit three posts during the match. Eibensteiner finished the day with five saves, while Gael goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery had three.

Northwestern is back at home Sunday, hosting Loyola at 1 p.m.
