Women's Volleyball Falls to Wake Forest, 3-0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Northwestern volleyball team was handed its first loss of the season, falling to Wake Forest 3-0 (21-30, 25-30, 31-33). The Wildcats are 2-1 after this weekend's season-opening action.
Freshman setter Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) and sophomore outside hitter Molly Kamp (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) were named to the Deacon Invitational All-Tournament team. Robertson had 99 assists in three matches, while Kamp posted 43 kills and 26 digs for the weekend and had a .254 hitting percentage.
In the match against the Demon Deacons, the 'Cats came out flat in Game 1, allowing Wake Forest to score eight straight points behind the service of middle blocker Michele Gordon. Game 2 had multiple lead changes, but Northwestern couldn't convert opportunities into big plays.
By the third game of the match things became more intense, as NU sophomore middle blocker Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) came to life with seven kills and three blocks. Lange had 13 kills and nine blocks in the match. Kamp had a game-high 16 kills and 12 digs.
Head coach Keylor Chan said he was happy his team was playing hard, but they failed to execute big plays when they were needed most. "They have no experience in big moments," Chan said after the tournament. "They are still learning how to win."
Chan said he was impressed with the tournament play of Robertson and junior outside hitter Cassie McKnight (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos). McKnight started all three matches and tallied 25 digs and 5 service aces off her jump serve. "Cassie was excellent. Steady as a rock," Chan said.
Up next for Northwestern is the Nike Pacific Challenge in Stockton, Calif. beginning Sept. 8.
