LOGAN, Utah - The Jenny Haigh era got off to a quick start, and that proved to be enough as the Northwestern women's soccer team parlayed two first-half goals into a 2-1 win over Utah State. The match was the season opener for both teams.
Katie Hertz (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg), an offensive stalwart for the past three years, kicked off her senior season in style. She headed in a corner kick just 11:49 into the match to give NU a lead it would not relinquish.
Another senior, Enyo Dzata (Eugene, Ore./South), pushed the lead up to 2-0 in the 39th minute with a short shot from directly in front.
Utah State responded at the start of the second half, as Amber Tracy tallied a goal just 1:47 into the stanza. However, Northwestern held the play most of the way for the day, keeping the Aggies from getting another shot on goal. For the match, the Wildcats outshot USU, 13-3.
Northwestern goalkeeper Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) had two saves and collected the win in her first action since 1999. McCreery redshirted last season. At the other end, Tracy Brody had 11 stops.
"We played really well in the first half, and I think that caused us to come out a little relaxed to start the second," said Haigh. "Utah State came out pretty charged up, got a nice goal quickly, and really made us battle to the end for the win."
Northwestern will meet No. 7 Washington Monday morning in a neutral-site match in Logan. Before that, the Huskies are scheduled to meet Utah State Saturday.
