EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University announced its 2001-02 men's basketball schedule today. Highlighting the schedule are two regular-season tournaments, a visit to Madison Square Garden and the 16-game Big Ten season.

The Wildcats begin conference play Wednesday, Jan. 2, entertaining Indiana. Other Big Ten teams who will make an appearance at Welsh-Ryan Arena this season include Ohio State (Jan. 12), Iowa (Jan. 19), Wisconsin (Jan. 30), Michigan State (Feb. 6), Minnesota (Feb. 13), Purdue (Feb. 20) and Illinois (Feb. 23).

Northwestern is tentatively scheduled for two nationally televised contests this season. The first national broadcast comes at 8:30 p.m. (CST) on November 28, when Northwestern hosts Florida State on ESPN2 as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The other national broadcast is February 16, when the Wildcats battle Penn State in State College, Pa., at 3 p.m. (CST) on ESPN2.

Northwestern is also scheduled for home games against Chicago State (Nov. 24), Kansas State (Dec. 8), Florida A&M (Dec. 15) and Liberty (Dec. 17).

The Wildcats tip off the 2001-02 campaign with three games at the Black Coaches Association (BCA) Invitational November 14-16 in Raleigh, N.C. Northwestern faces Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the eight-team affair at 1 p.m. (CST) Wednesday, Nov. 14. East Carolina or Rutgers will be NU's second-round opponent on the 15th, while the other teams in the BCA Invitational include host North Carolina State, Prairie View A&M, San Jose State and Fairleigh Dickinson.

Another highlight on the non-conference portion of the schedule is a game with Fordham to kick off a college basketball doubleheader in "The World's Most Famous Arena," New York City's Madison Square Garden, on December 22. On December 28-29, the Wildcats will take part in the azcentral.com/ASU Holiday Classic at Arizona State, meeting Louisiana-Lafayette in the first round.

For the first time in league history, the 2002 Big Ten Tournament will take place in Indianapolis. The Conseco Fieldhouse will host the event March 7-10.

"I like our overall schedule," said head coach Bill Carmody, who enters his second season at Northwestern. "It will be exciting for our guys to play at Madison Square Garden, and we have some nice tournaments. At home, our fans will get to see some quality opponents, both in and out of conference.
