EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern announced today that instead of having Kevin Bentley wear No. 30 this year, it would honor Rashidi Wheeler by having his No. 30 retired immediately.
In addition, the Wildcats will wear a patch on their jersey in remembrance of Wheeler.
"We felt it was important to recognize Rashidi immediately," said head coach Randy Walker. "By retiring the jersey this season, Rashidi will be the last Northwestern football player to ever wear No. 30."
Wheeler, a senior, passed away on Aug. 3. The safety started all 12 games for the Wildcats a year ago and was the team's third-leading tackler (88).
"I wanted to wear Rashidi's jersey to honor him this season," explained Bentley. "But we as a team decided that everyone should have a part of Rashidi when we are on the field."
