EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University softball coach Kate Drohan, about to enter her first year as the head coach of the Wildcats, has named her twin sister Caryl Drohan as her top assistant coach.

"There were a lot of excellent candidates, but Caryl's experience with a high-level program at Hofstra really stood out," said Kate Drohan. "The fact that she is my sister makes it especially exciting for me, but regardless of that she is a great addition to our staff and our program. I think Caryl brings a lot to the table as we get started with a new era -- we have a common vision for the future of Northwestern softball."

Caryl Drohan comes to Evanston from Hofstra University, where she spent five years -- four as an assistant coach, and the 2001 season as the associate head coach. During her tenure, the Pride won four consecutive America East championships (1998-2001) and advanced to the NCAA Championships three straight times (1999-2001). In 2000, the Hofstra coaching staff was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) regional staff of the year.

Drohan coached two All-Americans and 21 regional All-Americans in her five years at Hofstra, as well as 27 All-America East players.

Prior to her arrival at Hofstra, Drohan spent a year at Providence as an assistant coach. Drohan also played at Providence, from 1992-95, lettering four times as the Lady Friars went 145-72. They won ECAC Championships in 1994 and 1995, the Big East title in 1994, and played in the 1994 NCAA Championship. Drohan was second team All-ECAC in 1994 and second team All-Big East in 1995. She received a degree in social science from Providence.

Active on the camp circuit, Drohan has worked camps at Providence, Hofstra and Northwestern as well as at the University of Connecticut. She has also been a featured speaker and clinician on the East Coast for high school and American Softball Association (ASA) coaches.
