IOWA CITY, Iowa - After a 1-hour, 13-minute rain delay to start the game, Iowa moved a step closer to winning the Big Ten regular-season softball title Saturday, defeating Northwestern 3-0 in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes scored two runs in the third inning and another in the sixth to improve to 16-3 in the Big Ten and 42-10 overall. The Wildcats fell to 19-25 overall (7-12 Big Ten).
Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) was in the circle for the Wildcats and went the distance. The sophomore allowed nine hits and struck out three on the day.
Northwestern's bats were silenced by Iowa's Kristi Hanks, who allowed only J.C. Kira (Honolulu, Hawaii/Saint Francis) a hit on the day. Four NU players reached base.
The Wildcats and the Hawkeyes will play one more game in Iowa City tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
