Softball Downs Michigan State in Five Innings, 10-0

EVANSTON, Ill. -
The Northwestern softball team defeated Michigan State, 10-0, in five innings Saturday in East Lansing, Mich. The 'Cats tallied 10 runs on seven hits for the shutout.
After two innings, NU had a 4-0 lead. Then in the fourth inning, shortstop Robyn Pettinger (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) and left fielder Jessie Wellnitz (Waterloo, Iowa/East) hit back-to-back home runs. Pettinger, who went 3-for-3 with five RBI and three runs on the day, finished with her second dinger of the game in the fifth inning.
Sophomore Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) pitched a complete game, allowing five hits while striking out three. First baseman Alyson Schulz (San Diego, Calif./Serra) went 1-for-2 with two RBI, and second baseman Carri Leto (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla) went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Northwestern's record improves to 18-21 overall, 7-10 in conference action. The 'Cats and the Spartans return to action Sunday at 1 p.m.
