EVANSTON, Ill. -
The Northwestern softball team fell to Purdue, 2-1, Sunday at Anderson Field in Evanston. The `Cats (17-19, 6-8 Big Ten) tallied just one hit to Purdue's (29-21-1, 6-10 Big Ten) nine, as the Boilermakers swept the weekend series with a pair of 2-1 wins.
Northwestern's shortstop Robyn Pettinger (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) spoiled a no-hitter for Purdue's pitcher Meagan Dooley in the fifth inning with a base hit to center field. Senior Stacey Austin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) followed with a fielder's choice as Pettinger was out at second. But Austin stole second, and an error by the Boilermaker third baseman scored Austin for the first run of the game.
Purdue came alive in the sixth inning, however, scoring two runs on four hits. Lynn Tortorelli had a hard hit to right field that scored Heidi Foster. Pinch hitter Sara Hall then singled to left field to score Jesse Jones for the game-winning run.
Sophomore Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) pitched a complete game, striking out three. The `Cats are next in action on Tuesday at Illinois-Chicago for a make-up game from April 11. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
