EVANSTON, Ill. - The first-team offense scored 27 points and the first-team defense allowed only a field goal as the Spring Game Presented by Ameritech Yellow Pages was conducted Saturday afternoon at Ryan Field.

"We looked good today," said head coach Randy Walker after the day's festivities. "I was pleased, but we still have some work to do. We made it through spring ball without any major injuries, and that is something you like to see. We will have everyone ready for August practices."

Zak Kustok ran the first-team offense into the third quarter, completing 12-of-22 passes for 163 yards and a pair of touchdown strikes to Sam Simmons. Kevin Lawrence added the other two TD's, and had 19 carries for 114 yards.

Heisman frontrunner Damien Anderson did not take any snaps in Saturday's contest.

The first-team offense set the tone right away, slicing through the second-team defense and scoring when Lawrence ran it in from three yards out. Both teams stagnated after that, until late in the first half when Kustok found Simmons for a 24-yard strike to end a 70-yard drive.

Kustok and Simmons connected on a 25-yard score in the third quarter, and Lawrence added a 4-yard run for the other touchdown.

Tony Stauss split time with the different offenses, running with the second team into the third quarter and then moving with the first team for the rest of the game. For the day, Stauss completed 16-of-29 passes for 93 yards. He threw the only interception of the day, as Pat Durr picked him off in the second quarter.

Matt Danielson ran the second team in the second half, and was 6-of-10 passing for 75 yards.

Simmons led the receivers with 10 catches for 162 yards. Kunle Patrick added six catches for 45 yards, while Jason Wright and Jon Schweighardt had five apiece. With Torri Stuckey still nursing an injury, Noah Herron was the only other running back to see significant time. He carried 11 times for seven yards.
