EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern football team held its second spring scrimmage Saturday morning, and for the second straight week backup quarterback Tony Stauss had a standout performance.

The redshirt freshman connected with Ronnie Foster on a 53-yard touchdown pass on his first play from scrimmage, and never looked back. Leading the second-team offense two times and the first-team offense four times, Stauss completed 6-of-8 passes for 142 yards and led the team to four TD's. He had a 40-yard strike to Mike Griffin and ran for an 8-yard score.

Kunle Patrick caught five passes for 55 yards and was one of eight players to catch a pass on the day. He also scored a touchdown on a 9-yard double reverse. Griffin -- a walk-on quarterback last fall -- was a pleasant surprise, snaring a pair of passes for a total of 74 yards, while Sam Simmons and Jason Wright had four catches apiece.

Among running backs, Kevin Lawrence had 14 carries for 35 yards while Torri Stuckey had 29 yards on eight carries. Noah Herron saw his first action of the spring and gained 57 yards on 10 carries, including a 27-yarder on his first rush of the day.

David Wasielewski hit field goals from 29 and 38 yards.

For the second straight week, Damien Anderson was held out of the scrimmage while Zak Kustok saw limited action, playing in just two series. However, in his two series Kustok completed 11-of-12 passes for 99 yards, including an 8-yard TD strike to Simmons.

The Spring Game Presented by Ameritech Yellow Pages will be conducted this weekend. Kickoff at Ryan Field is scheduled for noon.
