EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University athletic director Rick Taylor announced today the hiring of Kate Drohan as the Wildcats' new softball head coach. Drohan will replace Sharon Drysdale effective at the end of the 2001 season. Drysdale resigned to oversee the implementation of a coaches' certification program for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
"I am very pleased that Kate Drohan will be replacing Sharon Drysdale as NU's head softball coach," said Taylor. "With Kate learning so much from Sharon, it should be a seamless transition."
Drohan has served the previous four seasons as an assistant to Drysdale and was promoted to associate head coach at the beginning of this season. Drohan has served as NU's recruiting coordinator as well as the team's travel coordinator. She is the director of the Northwestern Softball Camp and does on-field coaching during games.
"Working for Coach Drysdale over the last three years has been an incredible learning experience, both on and off the field," said Drohan. "I am excited about having the opportunity to incorporate my own philosophies with the high caliber of student-athletes here at Northwestern. I am looking forward to continuing the tradition of our nationally competitive program."
Drohan came to Northwestern from Boston College, where she served as assistant softball coach and assistant athletic director for facilities from 1995-97. In addition to her duties with the softball team, Drohan worked in game operations and administration with the Eagles. Drohan also has been a guest lecturer at various camps around the country.
Drohan earned her bachelor's degree in biology from Providence in May of 1995. As a member of the Providence softball team, she was named to the All-Big East First Team in 1992, 1994 and 1995.
