Softball Opens Big Ten Season 2-0

EVANSTON, Ill. -
The Northwestern softball team defeated Penn State, 4-3, in game two of a doubleheader in State College, Pa., Friday. The 'Cats improved their record to 9-11 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten.
Northwestern battled back from a 2-1 deficit in the sixth inning, scoring two runs to take a one-run lead going in the bottom half. Penn State tied the game at three apiece in the top of the seventh, leaving the game for the taking.
NU began the seventh inning with a single by sophomore Robyn Pettinger. Freshman J.C. Kira hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Pettinger to second base. Then freshman Carri Leto hit a single, bringing home Pettinger for the win.
Junior captain Gretchen Barnes had an excellent game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, one RBI and one stolen base. Sophomore Lauren Schwendimann pitched her first complete game of the season, allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out three.
NU rapped nine hits while the Nittany Lions committed three errors and tallied eight hits.
The 'Cats travel to Ohio State for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday and play the Buckeyes again on Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
