Softball Clinches Win Against CSU-Northridge, 9-7

EVANSTON, Ill. -
The Northwestern softball team defeated CSU-Northridge, 9-7, in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday in Northridge, Calif. Game two was cancelled due to darkness.
The Wildcat bats sizzled, as NU tallied nine runs on 11 hits. Junior Erin Jancic (Houston, Texas/Alief Elsik) was 3-for-4 with one double, two runs and one RBI. Sophomore Andria Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./Westchester) went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Other `Cats with an RBI included sophomore Alyson Schulz (San Diego, Calif./Serra), junior Gretchen Barnes (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor), junior Rane Gunderson (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) and freshman J.C. Kira (Honolulu, Hawaii/Saint Francis).
Jancic, Schulz, and sophomore Brett Nakabayashi (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) each scored twice for the 'Cats, while Barnes, freshman Carri Leto (el Cajon, Calif./Valhalla) and sophomore Jessie Wellnitz (Waterloo, Iowa/East) scored once.
In the circle, sophomore Brie Brown (Nashville, Tenn./Harputh Hall) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out four.
The Wildcats improved their record to 7-11 and broke an eight-game losing streak. NU begins Big Ten play on Friday, March 30, traveling to Penn State for a doubleheader.
