Softball Goes 2-2 at South Florida Tournament

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern softball team opened its season last weekend at the Louisville Slugger Invitational in Tampa, Fla. The Wildcats posted a 2-2 record, with weather conditions that canceled one of their games and postponed another in the fourth inning.

On Friday, the `Cats began the tournament with a 5-1 loss to Florida Atlantic. Carri Leto and Brett Nakabayashi each went 1-for-2 at the plate, with Nakabyashi scoring the lone run for Northwestern.

Northwestern took on host South Florida Friday evening, spoiling the home turf with a 2-1 victory in extra innings. Jancic and Rane Gunderson each had an RBI, bringing in Leto and Stacey Austin, respectively. Gunderson's RBI came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when she hit a sacrifice to bring in Austin for the win.

Saturday's game against No. 2 Arizona was delayed by rain in the fourth inning with the Wildcats behind, 4-0. Eight hours later, they resumed the game and Northwestern fell, 6-0. Schulz was the only `Cat to get a hit as she doubled in the second inning.

The Wildcats' game against Hawaii, which was scheduled for Saturday, was moved to Sunday while their game against Tennessee, scheduled for Sunday, was canceled due to the delay backups on Saturday.

In the final game, Northwestern defeated Hawaii, 4-1. Nakabayashi went 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts, while Leto and Jancic also succeeded in stealing a base. Jancic went 2-for-2 at the plate and Andria Caruthers went 1-for-1. Austin was 2-for-3 at the plate. Barnes, Caruthers and Austin picked up RBI while Leto, Nakabayashi, Jancic and Austin each scored.

Brie Brown pitched four complete games for Northwestern, accumulating a 1.75 ERA in 28.0 innings with 17 strikeouts.

The Wildcats return to the road on February16 at the San Diego State Tournament. They start the tournament that Friday against Utah State at 3:30 p.m. central time, then play Cal. State-Northridge at 8:30 p.m. that evening.
