Evanston, Ill. - Northwestern men's tennis coach Paul Torricelli was recently presented the Illinois State Pro of the Year Award by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA). Torricelli, who is in his 18th year as head coach of the Wildcats, was recognized by fellow pros for his ongoing commitment to the USPTA and local tennis organizations. Also taken into consideration was Torricelli's pro teaching and playing records, along with his continuing education seminars.

Torricelli has been instrumental in developing the Tennis Opportunity Program (TOP) here in Evanston. A scholarship in Torricelli's name has been developed to help provide tennis lessons to disadvantaged Chicago youth during the summer. The scholarship also provides free indoor lessons during the winter to advanced junior players. Torricelli has taught classes and served on the advisory board for the TOP's program.

The USPTA is the world's oldest and largest association of tennis-teaching professionals. This non-profit association strives to raise the standards of tennis-teaching professionals throughout the world, while providing greater awareness of the sport.
