San Diego, Calif. - The Northwestern softball team exploded for five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back as they finished play at San Diego State's Campbell/Cartier Classic with a 6-0 win over Long Beach State Sunday afternoon. Brie Brown went the distance on the mound for Northwestern, giving up only four hits and striking out two. That marks Brown's fourth complete-game victory of the tournament.
Offensively, the 'Cats started strong, batting around in the first inning while scoring five runs. Erin Jancic's RBI double scored Brett Nakabayashi to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead, and Gretchen Barnes and Rane Gunderson both added two-run singles. Northwestern added another run in the second, when a Carri Leto sacrifice fly scored Nakabayashi.
In Saturday's first game, the 'Cats hit their only roadblock of the tournament, falling to the Hornets, 9-4. Leto led the way offensively for Northwestern, going 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored and two RBI.
In Saturday's nightcap, the 'Cats got a game-winning single from Alyson Schulz in the sixth inning to gain a 2-1 win over host San Diego State. Northwestern took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Jancic in the third inning, before the Aztecs tied the game in the fourth which set up Schulz's heroics.
Brown went the distance on the mound, striking out seven and giving up only one unearned run.
The Wildcats' record now stands at 6-3. They are next in action March 2-4, when they travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for the Florida State Seminole Tournament.
