SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Northwestern softball team opened its first day of action at San Diego State's Campbell/Cartier Classic with shutout wins over Utah State and Cal State-Northridge. Brie Brown, who has pitched every inning of every game so far this season, got both wins on the mound for the 'Cats.
In the first game against Utah State, the Wildcats scored two runs in the second inning and then three more in the third to defeat the Aggies, 5-0. For Northwestern, Carri Leto and Brett Nakabayashi each hit doubles while Brown scattered four hits to pick up the win.
In Northwestern's second game of the evening, the Wildcats defeated Cal. State-Northridge, 1-0. Brown allowed six hits to the Matadors, but left eight baserunners stranded in the contest. Offensively, NU's only run came in the third inning when Leto hit a two-out single, stole second base, and scored on a double by Nakabayashi.
The Wildcats improved their record to 4-2, and they will face Sacramento State and San Diego State on Saturday's continuing tournament action. Game times are set for 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. central time, respectively.
