EVANSTON, Ill. - Freshman Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) followed in the footsteps of sophomore Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and became the second Northwestern volleyball player to earn a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, announced by the conference today.
Lange was named honorable mention All-Big Ten for 2001, the first Wildcat to do so since 1993. She earned All-Freshman Team honors last season.
According to the coaching staff, Robertson was the "emotional sparkplug" for the Wildcats this season. She displayed her athleticism in coordinating the NU offense and making clutch defensive plays.
The freshman setter ended the season with a 9.77 assists-per-game average, and led the team in digs per game (2.41). Robertson was also third among the team in blocks, averaging 0.83 per game.
"Drew had a great freshman year," head coach Keylor Chan said. "I can't wait to see how she performs next season."
Lange led the team in kills per game (2.92) and blocks per game (1.62). She led the Big Ten Conference most of the season in blocks per game and was ranked as high as 11th nationally during the 2001 campaign.
Lange made her way into Northwestern's record books again this season. She is currently seventh on the career blocking list with 319. Her .269 career hitting percentage has Lange poised to set the record, and her 132 block assists this season is second only to her 2000 performance.
"It was good to see Erika pick it up at the end of the season," Chan said. "She has what it takes to be the dominant middle blocker in the Big Ten."
