EVANSTON, Ill. - Junior Winston Blake (Plano, Texas/Senior) led Northwestern with 20 points and six rebounds as the Wildcats closed out the exhibition season with a 70-47 win over Lithuania-Alita at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Northwestern won both of its exhibitions, while the Lithuanians fell to 0-6 on their tour.
Jitim Young (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) added 17 points, four rebounds and four steals, while Tavaras Hardy (Joliet, Ill./Providence) was the only other NU player in double figures with 11 points. Guard Collier Drayton (Lyons, N.Y./Lyons) did not score, but dished out eight assists and had two steals.
Northwestern jumped all over Alita from the start, scoring the first six points of the game and quickly bolting out to a 19-4 lead. That advantage swelled to 20 by the half (40-20).
The second half was a little sloppy on Northwestern's part, and the Lithuanians took advantage to draw within 14 on a few occasions. However, an 8-0 run by the Wildcats made the score 61-39 and effectively ended the contest. Northwestern had 22 assists on its 26 field goals, and added 16 steals.
Alita was led by Marty Andriukaitis, who had 13 points, and Saulius Kazevicius (11 points).
Northwestern tips off the 2001-02 regular season Wednesday afternoon, taking on Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the Black Coaches Association Invitational in Raleigh, N.C. That game will begin at 1 p.m. CST, but will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis at 7 p.m. CST on WGN (720 am).
