EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's soccer team suffered its hardest-luck loss of the season Sunday afternoon, dropping a 1-0 decision to Iowa at Lakeside Field.
The Wildcats outshot the Hawkeyes on the day, 15-6, and had several excellent chances. But in the end, it was a pretty second-half goal by Iowa forward Sarah Lynch that was the difference.
Northwestern fell to 2-7-1 overall, 1-4-1 in the Big Ten. The Wildcats have been shut out in four straight matches.
In the match's 74th minute, Lynch took a throw-in from the left side, spun around a defender with the ball, and uncorked a 15-yard shot that raced past Susie McCreery's right.
That was the difference in a frenetic game that saw Northwestern hold the play most of the match.
NU's dominance was tempered by Iowa goalkeeper Britta Vogele, who came up with eight saves and was forced to be spectacular on occasion.
After an uneventful first half by both teams, NU put the pressure on early in the second. Just three minutes in, Kristen Pearce lofted a shot from just outside the box that Vogele was forced to parry over the crossbar.
Eight minutes later, Ashleigh Garmon-who stood out on the frontline today- broke in on a semi-breakaway. She was unable to get comfortable with a shot, however, and put a 20-yarder right into Vogele's arms.
After Lynch's goal, NU had a few more excellent opportunities. With 19 minutes left, Carolyn Hack unleashed a rocket from 35 yards out along the right side that Vogele had to push away in superb fashion.
The Wildcats looked like they had tied the game with just more than two minutes left in regulation, when Kas? McCoy fed Aileen Guiney with a short pass and Guiney pushed it home past Vogele. However, Guiney was ruled offsides on the play and the goal was disallowed.
Northwestern will hit the road next weekend, taking on Minnesota in a Big Ten match Friday night and following it up with a game at Wisconsin-Milwaukee Sunday at 1 p.m.
