EVANSTON, Ill. - Not even two full days removed from perhaps its most tension-racked match of the 2001 season, the Northwestern women's soccer team enjoyed quite the opposite experience Sunday against Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne. The Wildcats scored early and often in gaining a 6-0 decision on Senior Day at Lakeside Field.
The easy win was a far cry from Friday, when NU needed overtime to defeat Wisconsin, 1-0, and in the process earn a bid into the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 1998.
The Wildcats have now won two in a row and improved their record to 6-9-1 with a pair of non-conference matches still to be played before the Big Ten Tournament Nov. 8-11 in West Lafayette, Ind. IPFW is now 3-13-0 overall.
On a day when the four outgoing seniors were honored, it seemed only fitting that they would lead the charge. Senior Kas? McCoy (Medina, Ohio/Medina) had two goals and an assist, and was a constant presence in the IPFW box with eight shots. Enyo Dzata (Eugene, Ore./South) had a goal and an assist, while Katie Hertz (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) and Katie Kovatch (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) were steady presences in the midfield and defense, respectively.
"You could not have asked for a better day overall," said head coach Jenny Haigh. "We scored a lot of goals, everyone got to play, and it was a nice way for our seniors to go out at home. It was fun for them to play a game without too much pressure, and they responded well."
Northwestern got a pair of goals just 16 seconds apart in the first half and 17 seconds apart in the second half en route to scoring three times in both stanzas.
Kelli Wilson (Fayetteville, Ark./Fayetteville) got the scoring started, lofting a cross from the left side that got caught in the stiff wind and blew into the goal over IPFW keeper Sarah Laib. Just 16 seconds later, McCoy scored the first of her two goals from 25 yards out, tucking it inside the left post. Twenty minutes later, sophomore Lindsay Stame (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) scored her first collegiate goal with a rifle from 25 yards out that beat Laib to the left side.
In the second half, Dzata found McCoy for a goal at the 62:53 mark, and then Dzata got one of her own from in front just 17 seconds later off a pass from Carolyn Hack (Downers Grove, Ill./North). Freshman Ashleigh Garmon (Oxnard, Calif./Buena), the hero in Friday night's win at Wisconsin, closed out the scoring with a bullet from the top of the box in the 70th minute.
Overall, NU outshot IPFW 24-4 and had nine corner kicks to just one for the Mastodons. Laib and Lindsay Moskwinski split time in the Dons' goal and had eight saves. At the other end, Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) shared the shutout with Anne Helm (Newton, Mass./North). Neither was called on to make a save.
Northwestern is back in action Wednesday, meeting Northern Illinois in DeKalb. A reminder that kickoff has been rescheduled and will now take place at 2:30 p.m. It was originally scheduled for 7 p.m.
