STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Wildcats couldn't snap No. 13 Penn State's 10-match home court winning streak and fell 3-0 (30-25, 30-21, 30-23) Friday night in State College.
NU drops to 8-10 overall and 4-7 in the Big Ten. Penn State, currently third in the Big Ten, improves to 15-4 overall and 8-3 in the league.
The Nittany Lions were led by Mishka Levy, who had a match-high 21 kills and a .405 hitting percentage.
Game One was a tight affair and was knotted at 15 before NU's Kelli Meyer (Madison, Wis./Edgewood) hit three straight kills to take a 18-15 lead. The 'Lions responded with a 15-7 run to end the game.
Despite the strong start by the 'Cats, Penn State surged ahead for quick victories in games two and three. And though the score did not end in Northwestern's favor, the level of play was a marked improvement over last weekend's Big Ten effort.
Meyer finished the match with 10 kills. Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had a team-high 11 kills and six blocks. Freshman setter Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) had 35 assists and five blocks. The 'Cats outblocked PSU by a narrow margin.
Lange, though only in the middle of her sophomore season, is now among NU's all-time blocking leaders with 265 in her career. With four more blocks she will move up to the ninth spot.
Northwestern now travels to Columbus, Ohio for a Saturday night match with No. 10 Ohio State.
