Men's Swimming and Diving Opens Season Strong

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Northwestern's men's swimming and diving team soundly defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the season's first dual by a score of 139 to 90.
The Wildcats took first in 11 of 13 events, including the first three team places in the 400 medley relay.
NU's All-Americans won their signature events by a significant margin. In the 200 breast, sophomore Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) was 11 seconds in front of the nearest competitor and finished in 2:08.92.
Junior Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep) won the 1000 Free by nearly eight seconds (9:44.77). O'Connor took the 200 backstroke by more than ten seconds (1:53.89).
Adding to NU's point total was a 500 freestyle win by Mark Hamming (Lake Forest, Ill/Lake Forest). The sophomore had a time of 4:41.01, making him victorious by nearly ten seconds.
A pair of newcomers picked up top times as well. Sophomore transfer Steven Petric (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) won the 200 free (1:46.16), and freshman Nick Eggen (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) finished first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.93.
On the diving board, Elliot Massuda finished first in the 3-meter dive (244.43) and second in the 1-meter (221.18).
Wisconsin-Milwuakee is one of the teams Northwestern will host in the NU Relays Sunday at Norris Aquatic Center. The co-ed event gets underway at noon.
