MILWAUKEE, Wis. - After a series of heartbreaking results, it looks like the tables are finally starting to turn for the Northwestern women's soccer team.
On Sunday, the Wildcats gained their second straight 2-1 victory, this time in regulation against Wisconsin-Milwaukee. NU improved its overall record to 4-7-1, while UW-Milwaukee saw its nine-match win streak snapped. The Panthers fell to 9-3.
"It was important for us to come out and play the type of soccer we know we can play," said head coach Jenny Haigh. "We couldn't afford to let up because this was a non-conference match, and there was certainly the chance for a letdown after Friday's win over Minnesota. But we played hard and got a good result against a team that is playing very well, and that is gratifying."
Katie Hertz (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg), whose goal late in regulation Friday tied things up against Minnesota in a match the Wildcats went on to win in overtime, was the hero again Sunday. The senior had a goal and an assist to lead the way.
Hertz got things started in the 61st minute, heading home a corner kick from Aileen Guiney (Naperville, Ill./North). It was Hertz' team-leading fourth goal of the season, and all of them have come on headballs. It was also her 19th career goal, moving her into a tie with Dionne Latimore for third place on NU's all-time list.
"Katie brings a consistency in the air for us," said Haigh. "She played very well against Minnesota, but played the entire game up there and I think she was a little sluggish at times today. But she came back strong and took advantage of her opportunities when they came up today."
UW-Milwaukee tied things up less than three minutes later. Off a corner kick, the Panthers' Lisa Bengtsson collected a Northwestern clear and fired an 8-yard shot that was deflected and went past NU goalkeeper Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South). No assist was given on the goal.
But NU had the final answer on the day in the 73rd minute. Hertz sent in a long ball that Ashleigh Garmon (Oxnard, Calif./Buena) got to ahead of Panther goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin. Garmon then put it into the open goal.
Northwestern outshot UWM on the day, 9-7, as McCreery had four saves in the goal. McCreery has now allowed just a single goal in five straight matches, eight of the last nine, and 10 matches overall.
Northwestern is on the road again this weekend, playing a pair of Big Ten matches. On Friday, the Wildcats meet Ohio State (6 p.m. CDT), and on Sunday they are at Penn State (noon CDT).
