EVANSTON, Ill. - POSTGAME QUOTES FROM THE NORTHWESTERN-PURDUE MEN'S BASKETBALL GAME ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 6:

NORTHWESTERN HEAD COACH BILL CARMODY

"I think they took us out of our offense in the first half. They were pressuring our guards a little bit and we didn't handle it very well, and so we broke down and weren't getting very good shots. When your offense isn't playing well, it puts an awful lot of pressure on your defense. Purdue deserves credit. They put some heat on us and it bothered us, and I don't know what we're going to do about it because it's not the kind of pressure that's oppressive. It's just normal man-to-man defense."

"I was real disappointed because we didn't come out aggressively, and this is our home court. After we started our offense, we got some pretty good shots and pretty good looks. It seemed like our guys were open and we weren't making passes."

On Aaron Jennings' play: "Aaron gave us a little energy which rubbed off on a couple of our guys. I thought we were getting good shots in the second half, but still we missed a lot of easy shots."

PURDUE HEAD COACH GENE KEADY

On Purdue's fast start: "We focused on stopping the back-door cuts and 3-point shooting, which (Northwestern) has been very successful at. On offense, we tried to get the ball inside to Josh Allison. I think our start was the difference in the game."

On NU getting back into the game: "They really stepped up their intensity on defense. I think you get worried that you're going to lose the game when you're down that much so quickly."

On Purdue's free throw shooting late in the game: "We had a lot of guys playing more minutes than they had been. We really only played seven or eight guys, so maybe they were a little tired."

On Purdue's turnovers: "What I was more concerned about was our passing on fast breaks in the second half. I can never understand what's so hard about running a fast break. You stop at the free throw line and make the defense make a mistake. We were leading the league in assist-to-turnover ratio, but I'm sure we're not leading the league anymore after today."

On Josh Allison's play: "I think when we got into trouble in the first half, he was kind of floating around, lollygagging. We went into halftime and told him we knew they couldn't match up with him."

On Bill Carmody's future in the Big Ten: "I think he needs to get some older kids in there. It's hard to teach back door cuts. But they were very, very successful for many years with (the offense) at Princeton, so I have a hunch he'll be OK."
