Men's Swimming Splits Duals at Norris Aquatic Center

The Northwestern men's swimming and diving squad split a pair of dual meets against Ohio State and Iowa over the weekend. The Wildcats defeated Iowa, 200-147, while falling to Ohio State, 184-168. Ohio State beat Iowa, 193-157, at the double-dual meet taking place at the Norris Aquatics Center in Evanston.
Sophomore Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brohy Prepatory) broke a pool and school record on his way to a victory in the 200 butterfly. His time of 1:46.59 breaks his previous school record from a year ago by .39 of a second and breaks the pool record by 1.94 seconds. O'Connor also took a first in the 400 individual medley (3:59.51) and a second in the 100 butterfly (49.72). Each of his times were team and personal season bests.
Other winners for Northwestern included Mike Shue in the 1,650 freestyle (15:44.37) and the 500 freestyle (4:31.95), Aaron McCracken in the 100 breaststroke (55.97), Nick Barnes in the 50 freestyle (20.95), Tony Swanson in the 200 individual medley (1:50.88) and the 800 freestyle relay (6:44.84), consisting of Swanson, Shelby Clark, Shue and Steve Steketee.
Second-place finishes for the Wildcats included Swanson in the 200 backstroke (1:49.58), McCracken in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.85), Elliot Massuda in the 1-meter dive (295.13), Adam Kennedy in the 50 freestyle (21.01) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:04.38), consisting of Steketee, Kennedy, Jason Merchant and Barnes.
For the meet, Northwestern posted 35 season best times as well as two NCAA qualifying B standards (O'Connor in the 200 butterfly and McCracken in the 100 breaststroke).
Leading the way for Ohio State was Brian Malich, winning the 200 freestyle (1:39.05) and 100 freestyle (44.06), while Heath Knowling won the 1-meter (339.15) and 3-meter (328.05) diving events. Iowa took wins in the 400 medley relay (3:21.83) and 200 medley relay (1:31.69). Nick Hinz won the 100 backstroke (49.61) and Chris Brunson won the 200 breaststroke (2:04.87) for the Hawkeyes.
Northwestern's record moves to 4-3 overall, 3-3 Big Ten. They travel to Nebraska next weekend for a two day meet, starting Friday. Ohio State remains undefeated, upping their record to 11-0 overall, 3-0 Big Ten while Iowa drops to 0-5 overall, 0-5 Big Ten.
