The Northwestern field hockey team defeated Providence College 4-0 at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. NU's primary offensive output came from the duo of junior Nicole Smith (Warnbro, Western Australia/Como Senior) and senior Wendy Roberts (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills).

For the second time in as many games, Smith tallied five points scoring two goals and recording one assist. Her assist came just three minutes into the game when her shot was redirected by Michelle Cifelli (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex)to put the `Cats up 1-0.

Before the first period was over, Smith would convert two penalty corners with the help of Roberts and Jodie Condie (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne) to put Northwestern up 3-0 at the intermission.

Northwestern held the Friars scoreless in the second half as Jessica Yates (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) recorded her first shutout of the year, saving five in the win. Yates' five saves ties her with Shannon Small as the career saves leader with 441.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kendra Mesa (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) saw game action for the second time this year as she entered the game with just over ten minutes remaining and recorded one save.

NU posted one more goal in the second half as Roberts dribbled to the top of the circle and fired a shot past Friar goalkeeper, Heather Tattersall, with 22:04 left in the game.
