The Northwestern field hockey team defeated the 15th ranked Michigan State Spartans in the conference opener at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. Leading the way for Northwestern was Nicole Smith (Warnbro, Western Australia/Como Senior) who racked up two goals and one assist in the victory.

Bridget Cooper (MSU) started the scoring in the first period as she took a pass from Jenny Sanders and Cynthia Martin and scooted the ball past goalkeeper,Jessica Yates (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) to put State up 1-0.

Northwestern answered when Colleen Hotz (St. Louis, Mo./Cor jesu Academy) redirected a Smith shot off a penalty corner with no time remaining on the first period clock tying the game at 1-1.

Michigan State started the scoring in the second half as Julia Adams converted a penalty stroke making the score 2-1 in favor of MSU. It was Michigan State's second penalty stroke of the game. Yates stopped the first chance early in the first period.

As the second period clock was winding down, Smith scored her first goal of the game when she converted a direct corner tying the game at 2-2. Assisting her on the play was Jodie Condie and Wendy Roberts.

In overtime, State had numerous chances to score as Yates came up big in the net. She ended the day with seven saves, two of them coming in overtime. Yates' seven saves put her six short of the all-time saves leader (Shannon Small) in the Northwestern record book.

As Michigan State couldn't convert two penalty corners, Northwestern tallied just one shot inside the circle. The gamewinning goal came with 8:59 remaining as Smith dribbled from 30 yards out and fired a shot past MSU goalkeeper, Mireille Evans.

Northwestern improves to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Michigan State falls to 6-3 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten play.
