Women's Soccer Hands Indiana First Loss, 1-0

Sept. 15, 2000
EVANSTON, Ill. - Katie Hertz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) scored in the 75th minute of action, and the Northwestern women's soccer team made it stand up as the Wildcats defeated previously unbeaten Indiana, 1-0, in Bloomington.
The match was the Big Ten opener for both teams.
Hertz's shot came off a cross from Gina Napoli (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and deflected off IU defender Jena Kluska. It went high in the air, where IU goalkeeper Shaunna Daugherty had no chance to stop it.
The Wildcats' shutout of Indiana not only marked IU's first loss on the season but also marked the first time since last season that the Hoosiers were shut out. Iowa handed them that shutout on October 17, 1-0.
Erin Ekeberg (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had six saves to pick up the win for Northwestern, which is now 2-3-1. It marked her second consecutive shutout.
The game was fairly even throughout, as NU narrowly led in shots (10-9) and corner kicks (3-2).
The Wildcats travel to West Lafayette on Sunday for their next match, against Purdue. The Boilermakers dropped a double-overtime game, 2-1, to Michigan on Friday in their Big Ten opener.
