Women's Volleyball Wins Wildcat Volleyball Classic

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern (3-7) won its third consecutive match, 3-1, over Cleveland State (6-4) in the final match of the Hampton Inn & Suites Wildcat Classic Saturday. Freshman Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) was voted the tournament's most outstanding player.

Northwestern won a smooth first game, 15-6, but Cleveland State stormed back in a long second game to win, 17-15. The Cats returned to form for the third game, winning 15-5, before closing out the match 15-6 in the fourth.

Lange led the Wildcats with 17 kills and had a .556 hitting percentage in the final. Lindsay Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) recorded 15 kills and three service aces, and all-tournament player Sarah Ballog (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita) had 11 kills and a team-high nine blocks. Carmen Burbach (Columbus, Neb./Scotus Central Catholic), also all-tournament, had 24 digs in the match. Cleveland State was led by Molly Hoying's 18 kills.

In the evening's first match, Buffalo (2-7) defeated Towson (2-8), 3-1.

In addition to Ballog and Burbach, the all-tournament team comprised Erinn Kingman and Michele Smith of Cleveland State, Keri Shiels of Buffalo and Towson?s Meridith Baron.

Northwestern's next match is its Big Ten opener against Indiana on Friday, Sept. 22 at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. Start time for that match is 7 p.m. Central.
