EVANSTON, Ill. - Keylor Chan has been named Northwestern University's head women's volleyball coach. The announcement was made today by athletic director Rick Taylor. Chan, a former assistant coach for the Wildcats, returns to NU after spending one season as the head coach at Furman University.
"We're very pleased we found as quality a coach as Keylor in a short amount of time," said Taylor. "We believe his experience as a head coach at Furman and his familiarity with the Big Ten and Northwestern will continue the growth of our volleyball program."
Last season, Chan guided Furman to a 18-15 overall mark, including a 13-7 conference mark. While under Chan's direction, the Paladins climbed 22 positions in the Sagarin Power Rating.
Prior to his tenure at Furman, Chan was an assistant coach for the Wildcats for two seasons. During his time at NU, Chan helped improve the Wildcats' rank in the Sagarin Power Rating from 175 to 38. While an assistant, he was responsible for development and implementation of drills and conditioning work, scouting and statistical analysis of opponents, scheduling and team travel.
Before joining the Northwestern staff in 1997, Chan spent a year as an assistant at Kent State University, where the Golden Flash recorded a 20-12 record overall and the team's first-ever winning mark in the Mid-America Conference at 10-7.
As an undergraduate at the University of Florida, Chan coached the Gators' men's club team to the 1995 Men's Club National Final Four and posted a 67-13 mark in two seasons at the helm. During that time, Chan also served as an undergraduate assistant for Florida's Lady Gator varsity program, which won four SEC titles and advanced to one Sweet 16, one Elite Eight, and two Final Fours during his tenure. Chan graduated from Florida in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology and cell science, with an emphasis in chemistry.
"Northwestern has provided me an opportunity of a lifetime," said Chan. "I am very fortunate to have the chance to work with a talented group of student-athletes and I look forward to the success of this program. The combination of athletics and academics at Northwestern is what collegiate athletics should be about, and I'm honored to be a part of this great institution."
Chan starts at Northwestern on June 12. He replaces Kevin Renshler, who resigned in May after three seasons to take the head coaching job at Auburn University.
