EVANSTON, ILL. - The Big Ten regular season championship will be decided on the final day. Brooke Siebel hit a grand slam home run to key a five-run fourth inning as Northwestern remained in the hunt for the title with a 6-2 victory over No. 15 Iowa at Anderson Field. The Wildcats improve to 26-21 (12-5 Big Ten) while Iowa falls to 41-12 (13-4). NU needs a win over the Hawkeyes tomorrow and a Michigan loss to claim the crown.
Iowa scored single runs in the second and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead before the Northwestern bats came to life. Infield singles by Brett Nakabayashi (Irvine, Calif.) and Mikie Chambers (Country Club Hills, Ill.) started the inning. Erin Jancic (Houston, Texas) followed with a solid single to rightfield to load the bases before Siebel unloaded them, taking a 3-1 pitch from losing pitcher Kelly Zeilstra over the left-centerfield fence for her fifth home run, and second grand slam, of the season. NU added another run in the inning on an RBI-single from Alyson Schulz (San Diego, Calif.) before Jenn Shull (San Jose, Calif.) closed the scoring with a solo homer in the sixth. Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif.) settled down after the tough start, holding the Hawkeyes hitless over the final four innings to run her record to 16-9.
The two teams conclude the regular season tomorrow with a single game beginning at noon.
