Men's Golf Ninth After One Round of NCAA Championships

EVANSTON, ILL. - EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern men's golf team stands in ninth place after one day of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships in Opelika, Ala. The tournament is taking place on the Grand National Lake Course, a par-72, 7,003-yard course. The Wildcats shot a first-round 287 and is 15 strokes behind leader Texas (272).
Senior Jess Daley (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) led the way for the Wildcats, shooting a first-round 69 to put himself in a tie for eighth place, six strokes behind leader David Gossett of Texas. Gossett's 63 tied an NCAA Championship record with Arizona State's Phil Mickelson (1992) and Oklahoma's Jim Begwin (1984). It also tied the Grand National Lake Course record with Auburn's Jason Dufner.
Defending national champion Luke Donald (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England/Royal Grammar School) is in a tie for 13th after shooting a first-round 70, while David Shaffer (Andover, Mass./Andover) and Danny Riskam (Olney, Md./Sherwood) chipped in with rounds of 74 to put them in a tie for 75th. Josh Habig (Jasper, Ind./Jasper) finished the first round with a score of 75 to place him in a tie for 96th.
