EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's tennis team fell to Stanford, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Championships Saturday afternoon in Palo Alto. The top-seeded Cardinal improved to 23-1 and will face Auburn, while Northwestern finishes the 2000 campaign with an 11-12 record.
Stanford earned the day's first point by sweeping all three doubles matches, then clinched the victory with straight-set wins at the first, second and fourth singles spots. The other three matches were abandoned at that point.
Two Northwestern players, Josh Axler (at No. 3) and Jackie Jenkins (at No. 4), had extended their Cardinal counterpart to three sets before falling.
