IOWA CITY, IOWA - Jenn Shull (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) cracked a two-run homer and Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) made it stand up as the Northwestern softball team (28-23) eliminated Purdue from the Big Ten Softball Tournament, 2-1, Friday afternoon in Iowa City.
Erin Jancic (Houston, Texas/Alief Elsik) got NU started with a leadoff single in the fourth. Brooke Siebel hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Jancic at second, before Shull took a Meagan Dooley pitch over the centerfield wall to give Northwestern a 2-0 lead.
Schwendimann, meanwhile, sailed through the first five innings before the Boilermakers cut the lead in half with a run in the sixth. After NU squandered a chance to add some insurance, Purdue mounted a threat in the seventh. A single sandwiched between two Schwendimann strikeouts had Purdue down to its last out. However, a bloop double on the chalk of the leftfield line put Boilermaker runners at second and third. Schwendimann ran the count full before blowing a high fastball past Jessica Jones to end the game. For the game, Schwendimann scattered seven hits and struck out nine to record her 18th win of the season.
Northwestern advances to face third-seeded Penn State tonight at 7:30 p.m.
